01:30am - Tide is at the 9 on the marker, Wind is 0 knots, Water looks clear, Sky is clear. I pull up and guest whos here? Jim and Jason, they said
it's pretty slow and they were right. I fished for 30 mins. and only pulled out one tiny bass. I go back to the day shift next week at work, so you
won't see a lot of 2:00am reports any more. I should start having more night reports.

02:00am - Tide is at the 9 on the marker and the current is moving fast, Wind 0 knots, Water ? Sky high clouds. A quick 10 min lunch break. The tide
is going out really fast. I fished the light pole and managed to pull one tiny bass out in 10 mins. I saw a lot of Mackie's chasing bait fish under the light. I wish
I could stay longer, when the tide slows down. I want to hit the 100 fish for the month of June, almost there.
tn_P6280001.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes)
09:00pm - Tide is at the top of the 9 on the marker, Wind is 0-1 knots, Water green and clear, Sky clear. 7 or 8 people out here fishing, but not
to much action. It's open down by the bridge, the current is pretty slow and going out. Well I worked this spot for 20 mins. and only managed to pull out two
small bass. I tried the light pole and only one hit there. A few casts at the east end and I'm out of here. I'm at 101 fish caught and released for me at The Rail
for the month of June. It kind of suck my 100th fish was so wimpy!

01:30am - Tide is at the bottom of the marker, Wind is 0 knots, Water looks clear, Sky overcast. Lunch break, tried down by the bridge and got
a few hits. Then I got one of those hits that's like a little tap and then nothing, so I reeled down and set the hook. It's a small halibut on the my
AppleSeed Spring Grub . Then I moved to the east end and got a few more hits. 15mins and out of here.
tn_P6270002.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes)
09:00pm - Tide is at the 8 on the marker, Wind is W 3-4 knots, Water looks good, Sky Cloudy. Got some regulars he today. Down by the bridge is open
I'll try there. 8-10 mins. into it and not even a hit, the condistion look good, current is real slow. Then just as my bait falls into the channel from the other
side, I get a hit. It's fighting like a halibut, a small one and that is what it was. The big ones are out there.

I saw some little ridges in the sand just under 2 inch of water. I took the sand crab trap and dug up some sand, washed it out in the surf
and 15 big sand crabs. I can't wait to fish with these little babies.

04:00pm - Tide is at the 8 on the marker, Wind is W 8-9 knots, Water is clear green, Sky partly cloudy. My son want to Rail it again, I think
I got him hooked. He wants the mackies, no mackies today. My friend Ron, his wife and one of his sons are here, so I set my son up with a bait jig to make
bait for Ron. He caught a lot of jack smelt, then when he was playing with the bait in the bucket he kind of made friends with them and wanted to let them
go. Well he kept asking me if we can let them go and finally said ok and he let them go. Ron caught a small bass while I was there and I saw a small halibut
caught. A lot of people at The Rail, I see families with their kids, that's what I want to see here. Remember to bring the kids.

02:00am - Tide way low, Wind SW 0-1 knot, Water ? Sky cloudy. 15mins is all I got, low tide I'll fish the east end. Ok not much of anything
and then I hooked up with something nice, but 2 seconds into it and I farmed it, shook the hook. I got a couple of other small hit and that was it.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SKUNKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

06:15am - Tide is at the 10 on the marker, Wind is 0 knots, Water cloudy green, Sky is over cast. Down to the bridge with my favorite
AppleSeed Spring Grub . One little hit there in 10 mins so I moved to the drain with no luck. I tried the east end, I tried the
light poles, I tried different grubs. I worked this place for 40 mins and only to hits, one was a pretty good hit but no hook ups. It's just a
slow time right now, I've seen this before. This is a good time for halibut, I've noticed this time of year when the bass bite slows the
halibut are around. Last year the bass bite slowed down, but still catching small halibut, then caught to legal ones. Well I'm out of here.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SKUNKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

07:45pm - Tide is at the top of the 8 on the marker, Wind W 2-3 knots, Water clear green, Sky cloudy. A few guys fishing, one nice halibut.
I saw one of the guys catch about a 16 inch halibut while I was there. I fished for 20mins and got a few good hits, but only caught one bass.

one of them I see here all the time. I ask him if they had any luck and the one guy I see here all the time said he caught a nice halibut, about a 30 incher.
4 lb. test line he couldn't land it and no net. I fished the bridge and two casts into it I caught a small bass, then nothing. I moved to the east end and got

10:00pm - Tide is at the bottom of the marker, Wind is 0-1 knots, Water looks clear, Sky clear. First cast between the light poles, small bass. Moved
down to the bridge and getting some big hits, then I cast out let the bait fall to the bottom, I start to reel and it seems snagged, but I can reel like I have sea weed.
Well I reel it in and again I catch a octopus. I'm fishing and Jim and Charlie pull up, these guys are hooked. Were all fishing and Jim shows me this green plastic tube
lure, he said he's had this lure for ten years and never used it. I said you don't if it will work if you don't use it. Well he used it and caught this nice bass by the
bridge. I moved to the east end and a couple casts and hooked a nice halibut. I lost it right at the rail, I should have fought it some more.

favorite AppleSeed Spring Grub and going to the bridge. *Bang* *Bang* *Bang* three small ones in the first few minutes, then I was just getting
some small hits. This AppleSeed Grub is my favorite, but this doesn't mean it works all the time, my gut tells me to use my Berkley Power Grub I fire this bait out in the channel and bounce it across the bottom and half way across *BIG BANG* I hooked up with this monster bass, it tried to run into the pylons
but I just muscled his head around and fought him in the open water. Now that will be my FIX for the day. I caught one more small bass, 15 mins and out of here.

that was only fare I caught two bass in 20mins. It's pretty windy, hard to feel the bottom. The bait bouncing across the bottom is how I catch most
of these fish. I caught these fish on some new plastic Power Minnow Grub from Berkley I picked these up at Kmart, I liked the colors.
Hey Ron lets fish this weekend.

It's been awhile that I didn't catch something when I fish The Rail. It's a nice day, tide is way low, I'll go down to the newport pier and try some surf fishing. The
tide is way out and the surf is way small, this should be perfect. I'm not getting any hits here, I'm going down to the first jetty (28th Street) I walk out on the jetty, to
the end and first cast a 16 to 18 inch halibut, it was trick getting it up on the rocks. I didn't have my camera so no picture. I got a few more hits there, but I had to
go get some sleep. I talked with Neal and maybe we will go tomorrow.

08:30pm - Tide is just at the 8 on the marker, Wind 0-1 knots, Water green and clean, Sky clear. A few guys fishing I saw one of them catch a small
bass as I got out of my truck. They also said some other small bass and around a 15 inch halibut. The water is starting to move faster, I'm going to fish the east end
with a big bait. Well 15mins. in and only a couple hits, I changed my bait to a smaller grub, tried down by the bridge, tried by the light pole. 20mins of hard fising and
I got skunked. Oh well it's going to happen some times, no big deal. The fishing has been good lately.

08:30pm - Tide is at the top of the 8 on the marker, Wind is W 4-6 knots, Water is dirty on the surface. I'm trying a new leadhead and plastic, the leadhead
is black with a yellow and black dot eye, the grub is clear with black on top and black, red and silver flake. I started down by the bridge,
was getting a lot of hits but no hook ups. Then I caught a little bass, this bait is long 4 inches and the small bass miss the hook, I'm going for the big ones. I
moved down to the east end light pole and got a few hits there, then I got a nice thump, reeled down and set the hook. Nice bass, nice fight. Well 20mins
of fishing not to good, except for the nice bass.

01:30am - Lunch break, Tide is way low, Wind is 0 knots, Sky is over cast. Low tide, I'll try the east end where the water is deeper. Second cast
and I hooked this nice bass, it ran and got my line hooked up on something on the bottom, I let my line go free and walked down to the light pole, then I pulled
some on the line and I felt the fish come loose. It was just a normal fight after that. A few more cast and I caught one more small bass. Back to work.

cast and I caught a small bass, then another one, then I got snagged and broke off. Well not enough time to tie on a new bait, got to go back to work. It was
real dark, I think Edison Company was doing maintenance, all the buildings across the channel and Lido island lights where out, I mean all of the lights. It was
kinda cool looking.

I'm fishing at the light pole, not hits for 3 or 4 mins, I was going to leave with a skunk, but one more cast before I leave and landed a nice medium size bass.

01:30am - Tide not even on the marker, Wind is S 2-3 knots, Water ?, Sky over cast. Got a nice hit on my second cast but when I reeled up, half my
grubs tail was gone, that must of been a nice one. I have to change this grub, no tail action won't work. I'm going to use a true all Motor Oil grub 3 inch, it's hard to
find these true Motor Oil grubs, I used to get them from the BassProShop but they don't seem to have them any more. Well down to the bridge, the last couple of
night's have been good here. 10mins. there and only one hit, I'll try the east end where the water is deeper. First cast got a good hit and set the hook, nice little
fight, landed a nice medium size bass. Not as good as the last couple of night's but that's how it goes. If you go fishing a lot, you'll have more of a chance to be
there on the good days.

07:00pm - Tide is just at the top of the 8 on the marker, Wind is S 3-4 knots, Water dark green, Sky over cast. Five guys fishing with plastic,
they said they caught a few small bass. I using my Motor Oil grub, and fishing the east end. It's pretty slow, got a couple of hits,
then I got one of those hits, just one and then nothing, I knew this was a halibut, I reeled down on my line and set the hook. I have one on, as I pull back on my
rod, it feeling like I'm pulling a suction cup off the bottom, then it started swimming. I'm sure this is a halibut now, I can tell by the way it swims. I thought I had it
good and half way in it shook the hook. Then a guy fishing next to me I met, Steve caught a small halibut. I caught a couple small bass and Steve caught a small
bass. It seem slow for this slow moving high tide.

01:30am - Well can it be as good yesterday? Tide is not even on the marker (way low), Wind is S 1-2 knots, Water ? Sky is cloudy. You
know where I'm going, down by the bridge. I'm still using my favorite Apple Seed Spring Grub , I made a few casts by the pylon
and one little hit, so I cast straight out and let it fall to the bottom, now I'm bouncing it along the bottom and about in the middle of the channel
I got a small hit, I reeled down on the line and set the hook. oh ya this one is good, this thing went right to the pylon, it went to the right at least
15 yards to get to the pylon and it went there fast. I tried my best to steer it's head around to stop it from going into the pylon, but it got in there
anyway. I thought I was going to loose him for sure, this fish was stuck in there. I loosened up my line for just a few seconds to see if the fish would
come out, I felt him swim a little and I started reeling up the line and he came out. He gave a good fight after that also, I landed this Big Bass. I had to
grab the line to lift it over The Rail, I have two pictures of this guy. The very next cast I caught a small bass, then the bite seemed to just stop. Well
it wasn't as good as yesterday but the Big Bass will do. Oh ya, my last cast I got snagged and lost my last Apple Seed Spring Grub, I got to
order some from the BassProShop.

06:40am - A quick 10mins. Tide below the marker, Wind S 0-1 knots, Water greenish, Sky overcast. Flipped a few by the light pole
with no luck, not even a hit. I moved to the bridge pylon, got one hit. Then I tried just west of the drain and caught one small bass.
tn_P6070009.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes)
07:45pm - Tide is at the 8 on the marker, Wind S 0-1 knots, Water greenish clear, Sky is over cast. I'm using a see thru red grub,
The tide is real high, I'll try down by the bridge pylon (my lucky spot), well not so lucky today, not even a hit, I moved to the drain and still not even a hit. I think I'll
change the color of my grub, I'll try a green with black and silver flake. First cast by the bridge I caught a small bass, then I was getting hits but no hook ups. I
moved to the drain and caught one bass. This high tide should be good fishing but it's not. I had better fishing on the last low tide. Go figure.

01:30am - Tide low not even on the marker, Wind is 0 knots, Water super glassy, Sky is over cast. It's so nice out right now, the water is all glassy,
it's so quiet out here, all I hear is bait fish jumping all over. Ok I have 15mins. and it's low tide, so I try the east end where it's a little deeper. Two casts and
I got snagged on the bottom, but instead of breaking off I lift my bail and walked down to the drain, then flipped my bail over and started reeling and my bait
came loose. Well now I'm down here by the drain ( the drain is a pipe drain from the parking lot to the middle of the channel) mite as well fish here. Bam Bam Bam
three in a row, I'm using my favorite Apple Seed Spring Grub . I'll cast next to the pylon, ya a good one, right next it, now I'll let it drop all the way to the bottom and sit there for a few seconds, now I reel the line up and *BANG* a nice bass, that's four in 5mins. I caught one more medium bass there. I moved to the light pole because I saw a lot of bait down there. Two more bass there, it seems very good for a low tide. 7 Bass in 15mins not bad. Back to work.

06:30am - Stopped by on the way back from dropping my kid off at school, a quick 10mins and am I glad I did. The tide is at 10 on the marker, Wind
W 0-1 knots, Water greenish and glassy, Sky is overcast. I'm still using my favorite Apple Seed Spring Grub and going right to the bridge
pylon, I cast a few times to the left of the pylon then to the right side and BIG *BANG* oh ya this is a nice one, I hope my drag is set. This fish was really bending
my rod, just when I thought the line was going to break the drag cut loose, it was a little sticky. Well this big bass took line off my spool three times before I landed
him. Ok I'll bet there's another one in there, I cast to the right of the pylon nothing, one more cast there and *BANG* another nice bass, a little smaller than the big
one. Well only here for 10mins. I'll try by the light pole, three or four casts there and caught one small bass.

02:00pm - Tide is just hitting the marker, Wind W 3-4 knots, Water is greenish, Sky is over cast. One guy fishing when I get there, he said he caught
one small bass. I saw him catch another small bass, he looked like he was using a light colored swimbait. Two guys fishing across the channel caught two
small bass. Two other guys pulled up, one was using plastic swimbait and the other was using cut bait, didn't see them catch anything. 30mins not to good,
I caught two bass and one was so small, the bait seemed bigger, this thing was tiny.
09:15pm - Two groups of people there when I pull up and as I'm walking to The Rail one guy turns and looks at me and says "Rick" I say whats up
man, it's one of my friend Ron's son and his friends. Just as I'm talking with them one of there rods started clicking, looks like it broke off. I'll try down by the
bridge, third cast landed a small bass. I'm still using my favorite Apple Seed Spring Grub but it's getting beat up and it's the only one a have left.
I need to order some more from the BassProShop. As I walked back to the light pole, I asked the other guys that were fishing if they caught anything
and they said they just got there. Hung out with Ron's son for awhile, I know I'll see them here more often, you guys get my phone number from your
dad and call me when you go to The Rail. Later dudes. Today was a Good day!!

and black spec.
Grub, a few casts and I hooked a small halibut (8-10 ") it came off the hook while I was lifting it over the rail, good release. Well it's not so

06:00am - I'm on call for my network this weekend and got a call at 3:30am, I worked the network issue till 5:30am and my family is still sleeping, so off
to The Rail. Tide is at the 10 on the marker, Wind S 2-3 knots, Water is real clear, Sky is over cast. Started at the bridge, casting into the pylon, second cast and
I caught a real small bass, in the picture you can see how small I cut my plastic grub body down to catch these small bass. Well it looks like the sun will come
out early today, my son and I will probably go for a bicycle ride today down at the beach. Check out the pictures of the custom bicycles I made. We park at
The Rail, then ride from there, that way I can fish on the way back. Only 10mins here and I'm hungry so home it is.

11:30am - Had to roll to the office for another network issue and guess what’s on the way back? You guessed it, The Rail. I'll stop for 10mins. Ok the Tide
is not even on the marker, Wind SW 4-5, Water greenish, Sky over cast. I changed my grub color to smoke black with silver flakes, started down by the bridge
cast out right on the pylon and let go to the bottom, pulled up once and bang a nice bass (maybe just legal). Lame me, I forgot my camera, well got a few more
hits there, then tried down by the light pole and caught two more about the same size. The wind is picking up, I think the sky should be clear soon. I don't see any
bait in the water.
04:45pm - Tide is at 9.5 on the maker, Wind is S 6-8 knots, Water is clear green. I worked the pylon with a few casts and pull a bass out of there, then
I got caught on the pylon and broke off, so I moved to the light pole with my other rod and caught one more bass. I was getting hits, I think it's a lot of small bass.
I saw some dads with there kids fishing across the channel, that's cool, you can see them in one of bass pictures.

nice out here right now. I flipped out my light motor oil with green and black spec Grub at the light pole and first cast caught a small small bass,
then I was getting a lot of hits but no hook ups. I saw the other guy that was fishing catch 3 small bass and he said he caught 2 more earlier. Well going

get hooked. Ok I'm going to cut my grubs body in half, this should help to catch those small bass I keep missing. The next cast I caught a small bass,
then I was missing a lot of hits due to me, Lame setting of the hook. Only a few more minutes before I have to go back to work. I try by the light pole
where my truck is, first cast there and I caught another bass. Well I'm out of here.

01:30am - Took lunch a little early because high tide was at 12:29am and it's only going to swing 4.8 feet, so the water should be moving real slow.
Ok, The wind is 0 knots, tide is at 10 on the marker, the water is real glassy. I'm still using a light motor oil with green and black spec. Grub and going
to start at the west end by the bridge, I see a lot of bait over there. First cast I got a nice hit, then the next cast I nailed a nice bass, then another one the next
cast, and then the next cast another one. This is good, the water seem like it's not even moving (very slow tide movement ). Two more casts and one
more bass, then I though I got a hit and set the hook and seemed to be snagged but in some loose weeds or something, I could still reel my line up but like
I had a big wet sponge on it. Well I reel this in to clean off whats on my bait and guess what it is? It's an octopus, got to get my pliers. Now I'll try down by
the light pole, two casts there and hooked a croaker, then a few more casts and I think it's a Tomcod? Well got to go back to work, wish I could stay, it's good
here right now, 6 fish and 1 octopus is pretty good for 15mins of fishing.

06:45am - Quick stop, I drop one of my boys off at school and drive by The Rail, so I have rods in my truck and have to stop in for 5mins. Tide is low,
not even on the marker but moving slow, wind is S 3-4 knots, sky is over cast, water greenish. It's low tide so down by the bridge is usually not good, but if
you cast by the bridge pylon you can caught fish there, around the pylon the bottom of the bay is shaped like a small mound around the pylon, like a little
mountain with the pylon in the middle. This structure seem to hold fish on any tide and in less than 2mins. I caught a small bass. Well 5mins. and I'm out of here.
tn_P6010019.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes)
08:36pm - Got some time to burn before I go to work. The tide is just below the 10 on the marker, wind W 1-2, sky is over cast, water clean. There's
one guy fishing with his two little kids, he said he caught a few Mackie's and also said something hit some cut bait he had on the bottom that bent his pole
then it snapped his pole and line. Well I'll try down by the bridge, second cast and caught a bass , a few casts later and another one. Three bass altogether
in 30mins. This was a really good tide to fish, only a .5 foot tide swing from High to Low, the water was hardly moving.

02:00am - Lunch break, Tide is at 9.75 on the marker, wind is 0 knots, water glassy. Only have 10mins. to fish, I'm using a light motor oil with green and
black spec.
I'm starting on the west end, took a few casts right in front of the Lido sign and nothing, moved all the way under the bridge and nothing. So I
moved back in front of the Lido sign, a couple of casts dragging the bait real slow on the bottom and caught one small bass, then nothing. This spot in front
of the Lido sign was working good a couple days ago, well I moved to the east end and made a few more casts and caught two more small bass. It's slow
right now, I can always tell when I start catching a lot of small ones, it's the moon, tide, water PH, water tempature, that kind of stuff. It's got to get better soon.

and nothing, I moved to the east end and caught one more small bass. I'm using a 3 inch grub and missing a lot of hits, these must be small bass, I'm should cut
my bait down, I cut my baits body down so it's 3/4 the size it was. This help catch those small bass.

05/29/2006 -
12:35pm - Stopped by for 10mins. coming back from a bicycle ride with my son. Wind was West 5-6 knots, tide was at the 8.5 on the marker, water greenish. Only caught one little bass but even if I didn't catch anything it wouldn't matter, it was just to nice out.
5:30pm - Called an old high school friend Ron, we used to fish Newport pier all night for shark or any we could hook. So he's going to come over and fish
with me, we'll jig some live jack smelt, ya that should be good. Neal came down to with his pink stinker, well we jig a nice bucket of bait and thru one out to soak.
Neal was flipping has plastic, I tried my Motor Oil Grub, live bait in the water. All in all an hour and a half of fishing and Neal the only one that even got a hit.
I at least got to hang with my old friend for awhile.

5:30pm - I didn't get to The Rail today but Neal came by my house and he just came from there. So I can give all you friends a report, Neal said he caught
two small bass, boy that's not much Rick, what's up with that. Ok what can I say but here's the tides for today. When did Neal go fishing? And what was the tide swing? He was at my house around 5:30pm and it's 10mins. to my house from The Rail, he caught two small bass. It's a tide thing! The water was moving fast.

05/27/2006 -
3:50am - Finally got to take a break from work and low tide is at 4:21am height -1.4 feet, so I'm here a little more than a half hour before low tide.
Remember it's a tide thing, the tide was just high 6.5 and is going low to -1.4, that's a pretty good tide change (7.9 feet) not good to fish any time during
the middle of that tide change. So I'm fishing the at the end of the change to low tide and another thing is the next tide change a low -1.4 to high 3.5 that's
a 4.9 foot tide change, so even after the low the water won't be moving as fast as the last tide change. Now the tide is way low and you wouldn't
think the fishing would be that good but it was. I put on my good old Motor Oil Grub and went at it, the first few casts I took at the east end and it was
kind of windy there, blowing my line around, so I went over to the bridge. The first cast *** BANG*** nailed one, take the picture by my self. Next cast
***BANG*** another, this one a little bigger, ok this is just luck. A couple more cast and I hook another one, didn't move from that spot for 10mins. till
I had to go back to work and ended up catching 5 Bass. I really think fishing the right time of the tide makes a big difference.

6:40am - Skies are cloudy, wind SW 2-3 knots, water looks good. Tide is on it's way up, I still have on my Motor Oil Grub and I'm going to try down by
bridge. Second cast hooked a small bass, then a couple casts later got another one. Then I decided to check some other places out like Lido Island bridge,
this spot is good for halibut because it's almost all sand bottom. Click Here to see a picture of it at low tide. Well no luck there the tide is to low, cut bait would
work here right now. Ok I'm going to check the public docks on balboa peninsula, tide is still kind of low so I'll try the public dock at the end of the peninsula.
A lot of eelgrass around this dock, to fish this spot you keep your bait just off the bottom. Well looks like it could be a good day, on the third cast caught a
small bass. I was pulling my bait just above the eelgrass and that little guy came out of the eelgrass and hit my bait. Well I'm out of here, remember my prediction
of the best times to fish today.
Fish today between (10:00am and 12:00 noon) and or (2:30pm and 4:30pm)
tn_P5270045.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes) tn_P5270048.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes) tn_P5270052.JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes)
5:30pm - Just going to stop in for 10mins. to see if anyone is fishing and caught any fish. Skies are mostly clear some high clouds, wind is out of the west
8-10 knots, tide is coming up and it's just past the 9 on the marker. I'm so lame, I forgot my camera lame, lame, lame. Well when I get there one young kid that
just got there and making some live bait, a man and a woman that just got there, they are using mussels and a group 4 guys and a cute little kid in the back of a
BIG truck. The four guys have been here for about an hour, caught two small bass and one legal halibut on live bait (JackSmelt) they jigged up. Juan is the one
who caught the halibut, he said he will take a picture and email it to me to post. Well I'm here so I'll flip my bait out a few times, it's pretty windy. No hits, that's
ok I got my fix today, a total of 8 bass today. Well I'm going to jam some music with some friends tonight in HB and have to take PCH home so maybe I'll stop
by later tonight.
11:30pm - Wind none, tide real high at the 8 on the marker, water clean. I started by the bridge, I was there for 10mins. and caught 3 small bass. The
was moving out real fast.

05/26/2006 -
2:08am - Windy 5-6 knots, water real choppy, the tide is low low low. I think that part of the reason fishing here the last couple of days
hasn't been so good, it went from a high of 6.4 feet to a low of -1.3 that 7.7 feet difference. That's a lot of water moving and doesn't make for good
fishing. Real hard to fish in the wind, hard to feel the bottom. I gave it shot in a few different spots for 10mins. and one hit, to windy I'm out of here.
9:30pm - Quick 10min. check before I go to work, as I pull up who do I see leaving, Neal . I'll get a report from him, he said he's been
fishing for about 50mins. with just a few hits, he also said the tide is moving real fast. He was using a pink stinker with a 1/4oz. leadhead. Well
Neals out of here, let me check it out. The wind is out of the S 3-4 knots, tide is just passed the 7 on the marker, I'm using my see thru red grub,
a couple of guys pull up as I make my first cast, I'm only here for 10mins. they will possibly have better luck by being there at the top of the tide.
The 10mins. for me nothing, it's a tide thing. Let talk about tides and when to fish --- >

Tides and Fishing - From my experience fishing here, it's good fishing when you don't have a big swing in the tide from high to low and
low to high. On the 05/23/2006 the tide was low at 12:48pm height .8 feet and was high at 7:17pm height 5.8 feet, that's a 5 feet tide change. The
fishing was good during that high tide. On 05/25/2006 high tide was at 8:26pm height 6.4 feet and went low at 3:37am height -1.3 feet, that's a
7.7 foot tide change. I think this is too much water moving but doesn't mean you can't catch fish it's just not as good. I also find that top of the tide
and bottom are good times because as the tide is changing directions it slows way down for just a little while. I think any time you have a tide swing
of 5 foot or less you will have a better luck. Well that's what I think, remember to check the tides, look for a difference of 5 feet or less.

Here is my fishing time prediction for 05/27/2006 -
The tide is high at 10:57am height 3.5 feet. The change from low to high is 4.9 feet, then it goes low at 3:19pm
height 2.1 that's only a 1.4 foot tide change (3.5 - 2.1 = 1.5). Fish between (10:00am and 12:00 noon) and or (2:30pm and 4:30pm)
If any of you fish these times and the fishing is good, send me an email at rmsepulveda@sbcglobal.net and let me know how the fish was.

05/25/2006 -
6:15am - Just stopped by for 10mins. the sky is clear and looks over cast toward the beach, wind is S 1-2 knots, tide is at the bottom of the marker, water
is greenish and clean (no trash or moss) I'm using motor oil grub 1/4 oz. leadhead. I got a few good hits but know hook ups, tide is comming up and should be
good later.
9:00pm - Tides way up, it's at the 7 on the pylon marker, for those of you that don't know what I mean when I say the pylon marker Click Here
wind is SW 5-6 knots, water looks good a greenish. Don't see a lot of bait in the water. Well I'm going to use my last Apple Seed Spring Grub
I caught two nice halibut last year with this grub. I've been saving this last one because I haven't ordered any more from the BassPro shop, can't find
them any where else. I need to order some more but I only have one so it's going on with a little dab of super glue. When I pulled up, there were three guys
just leaving and they said they caught only one bass. I started in the middle and worked my way to the bridge and then under the bridge with only two
hits the whole 30mins. I was there. The tides real high you think that would be good but not always, I was here last year on the highs tide of the year (7.2)
got there half an hour before and fished till half an hour after and not even a hit. Well not to good today but that's ok it can't be good all the time. Karaoke
night at the ELKS Lodge so at least I got some free entertainment.

05/24/2006 -
6:30am - I think I'll try something new, I'm going down to the Santa Ana river mouth (River Jetties) and try my luck there. The tide is coming up
and it's pretty high right now so this mite be a good place, it's so nice out who cares. Well when I get there I try right by the bridge with no luck, but as I'm
fishing I look over at the life guard tower on the Huntington side and I see the police standing on and around it. I got to go see whats up and I can fish
while I walk over there. Well the fishing was no good but when I got close enough to see what was up I saw a body hanging from the tower, it looks
like someone hung themself. Oh man what you start thinking about when you see that kinda stuff, well that blew my fishing.
9:10pm - Skies are clear, no wind and the tide is just at the top of the 8 on the marker (nice and high) going out. One guy fishing, he said no
luck yet, it looks like he was using a greenish blue and silver swimbait. I went under the bridge where I've been catching some bigger fish, Made about
8 or 10 cast and nothing. Then I got snagged and broke off, I put a root beer color on this time, thru it out there a few more times, no hits. I see a lot
bait in the water, maybe too much. Well gota go to work.

05/23/2006 -
2:00am - Lunch break, nothing else to do but go fish. It's low tide, no wind and the sky is clear. The water looks clean (no Red Tide) hard to tell
it's dark out here. Well I still have my bright orange with black specs swimbait on so I'll use that. Getting hits like crazy but no hook ups, there's a lot of activity
in the water, something chasing the bait. Maybe little Mackie's! I think I got hit by one, then some kids went by in a small whaler and just before they got to the
bridge they gunned it making a big wake. Then it seemed like the bit stop, I decided to try a different color grub. I put on a see thru red grub, the first cast I nailed this nice bass. flipped it out a few more times and back to work.
6:40am - Stopping by on the way home from work, no wind the tide is at 9 on the marker, water is a brownish color. I still have the see thru red grub on, so I'll
use that. Getting no hits so I started working my way down to the bridge and then under the bridge. Second cast hooked a little bass, 6:55 I'm out of here got to go sleep.
8:00pm - High tide was around 7:30pm I think, when I got there it was almost at the 8 on the marker (nice and high). The sky is clear, wind out of west at 8 knots
Water looks nice and clear, Red Tide is gone. What made me come down here tonight is my friend Jim left me a message that he was going to be there around 8:00
Well here I am but no Jim, there's a few people fishing and it looks like no luck. I still have my see thru red grub on and it's been working so here goes. I'm going
under the bridge(back side) cause no one is there, my first cast *bang* I nailed a nice yellow fin croaker, next cast nailed a nice bass. As I was snapping a picture of
this one my friend Neal shows up, he's using a pink swimbait on 1/4 oz. leadhead. While he's getting gear out of his truck I hooked another small bass, no picture to
small. Neals next to me now right across from the lido sign just talking and Neal hooks up with a nice bass, the guy to the left of us looks like he just caught a nice
bass. It's looking good right now, Neal keeps getting hits but the tide is starting to move faster and I have to go to work, so I'm out of here. It looks like the red,
orange and pink colors are working better than the browns and greens. All in all the day was good, and I think the fishing is picking up, Well see you in the AM.

05/22/2006 -
10:20am - It's cloudy, windy but not to cold. The tide is below the pilon marker and the water is a redish brown, doesn't look good.
I'll use bright orange with black specs swimbait, second cast hooked a small bass. A few more casts and I'm out of here. It looks like blue
skys
are headed this way.
3:15pm - It's time to pick up my son from school and guest what's kinda on the way. (The Rail) Just a few clouds the wind is out
of the SW 8 to 10, the water is still ugly (Red Tide) the tide is just hitting the pilon marker. I'm still using the bright orange with black specs
swimbait, got a few hits but no hookups. 3:30pm out of here.
What is Red Tide? From Wikipedia Red Tide - Dinoflagellates dinoflagellates .jpg (200x150; 6956 bytes)

05/21/2006 -
2:45pm - It looks ugly outside, over cast, windy and stormy. Well I'll go check it out, two guys fishing cut bait, I asked them if they had any luck
they said no good today. Just as they were reeling up to leave one of them hooked a flatty (small) they released the fish and headed out. The
water is brownish and ugly, tide is at 5.5 on the marker. Ok, well I'm going under the bridge downtown out of the wind. Flipped a grub a few
times and got nothing, water looks bad and it's windy, a little cold, I'm out of here.
tn_P5210037..JPG (200x150; 6956 bytes)

05/20/2006 -
2:30am - stopped for lunch break, tides up nice and high but moving kinda fast (going out). I got one hit, I saw mackrel chasing bait under the parking lot light.
Only fished for 5mins. had to go back to work. If anybody has anything to report from The Rail send an email to me at rmsepulveda@sbcglobal.net
and in the subject line put "The Rail"
6:30am - off work for the weekend and stopping by you know where :) The Rail. Tide is at 6 on the marker, the water is like glass (dirty glass) and kinda greenish
so I put on a motor oil with black specs GRUB. Last night Charlie and Jim both caught nice bass all the way under the bridge so there I go, it's so quiet, all I hear
are the pigeons fighting. I see a lot of bait in the water, some small mackies chasing them, this spot (other side of the bridge) is kinda hard to fish, not much room
to cast. Second cast hooked up on a little bass, then missed one, then hooked up a little bigger one and then one more, all getting bigger. Then something hit my
bait hard and then didn't do anything, so I reeled down on my line and set the hook hard YA dude it's a nice one and running like a halibut, oh shit drags not set right ****>SNAP<**** That would have made a nice picture.
I know this sounds like a fish story but a least I have pictures of the three bass.

05/19/2006 -
2:00am - Lunch break stopped by and the tide is moving way fast, got a couple of hits, no hookups. Well back to work.
9:00pm - Stopped in before I go to work, my friends Jim, Charlie and some of thier friends are here. I showed Jim how to use a swimbait and now he's HOOKED.
The bite looks good tonight, I was just there 10min and Jim hooks up and landed this nice bass (under the bridge), 2mins later Charlie hook ups with a BIG BASS
this one he caught on the other side of the bridge. It looks like it could be good tonight and I gota go to work, well I'll stop by at 2:00am.

05/17/2006 -
Stopped by this mourning 6:00AM caught two small Bass, water kinda dirty, low tide. A lot bait in the water. Stopped by again before going to work about 9:00PM, caught one small Bass and got a lot of hits. Tide just started coming in and moving really slow, this should have been good fishing. I only stayed there for about 10 min. saw a school of mackies swim by and a lot of bait in the water. Well we'll see what happens tomorrow.
